awaken - Larkee - 4/21/2026

Everything feels fuzzy. Larke can't remember what he'd been doing last - probably brooding. He'd been doing a lot of brooding lately. Things had been slowly getting better. His family was around, he'd finally got old enough to get a real job. The pack had been forming nicely.

It all comes crashing down when he opens his eyes. This is not the lake surrounded by clover he'd been living in. The unfamiliar smells linger in his senses. It's as if he'd gotten up and traveled miles overnight!

He pulls himself up to stand. It's warm, the sun shining down on his pelt comfortably. Larke had always been an explorer. Despite the anxiety brimming under his skin, the curiosity wins him over. He stretches out tired legs and begins to move.

Soon enough, Larke spots one of the most beautiful landmarks he's ever seen.

The trio of waterfalls are loud, they pour down into a lake similar to that of the one he'd been living near previously. The expanse is so green, as if the spring was never-ending. He drinks from the lake, still watching the water rumble down.

RE: awaken - Iðunn - 4/23/2026

Iðunn was on the move, as per usual. It often did not stick around in an area for more than a few days, enjoying the motion of heavy travel rather than becoming lazy and familiar with an area. It stuck to mountains, as always, usually the harsher peaks. Less wolves there, it had discovered, much to its great pleasure. Strangers were irritating, as was small-talk. While it had grown to appreciate a companion to hunt with, it had long decided living with another sounded far too bothersome.

All of a sudden, however, it froze mid-step.

This was not the mountains it had been scaling not five second ago. Lush grass cushioned his scaly pads, the sound of crashing water battered his ears, and a gentle sun warmed his back. All the complete opposite of the lands he preferred. Snorting, it turned in a great, slow circle, yellow eyes narrowed at the liveable atrocity. It had been many months since it had stepped this far down, even the air was thick with oxygen, its lungs singing. Perhaps one of the only things it has missed was the air quality.

The rest, it could do without. Already, it felt hot, used to the weak sun and frigid temperatures, its fur too thick for any other biome. To make matters worse, it could not see a mountain range in the near distance; the skyline was obscured by trees, and that fucking waterfall. It wrinkled its muzzle for a moment, before spotting a pale form at the water below the falls.

Iðunn did not believe in magic, or any other silly religion, but it was still suspicious of the other. It began to make its way over to the other, drinking blissfully at the roaring lake. His pawfalls were slow, but not quiet. He had no reason to hide his approach, and doubted he ever would. A hacking noise made its way from its throat, warming up his vocal cords from lack of use.

RE: awaken - Larkee - 4/26/2026

Despite the obvious pawsteps, Larke does not hear them. His focus is completely on the raging waters - and the sound of it. He licks the water from his lip, drawing his ears forward to continue to listen to the roar of the water. He can't remember hearing a fall so strong before. Or hearing one of these ever, actually.

Only when the hacking sound comes does Larke snap to the stranger, teeth bared, growling.

What do you want? he snaps, confusion lacing his features.

RE: awaken - Iðunn - 4/28/2026

The stranger snapped at it, prompting the wolf to redirect its approach. It was unexpected, but nothing it wasn't used to. It huffed, almost a laugh, if not for the utter lack of emotion on its face. This small, fat male was not at all threatening, but his response made Iðunn a tad wary. It wasn't as if there were many candidates to spar with in his loneliness.

Conversation was not one of Iðunn's strengths, especially with its understanding of English. Want to know... how I here. Its thick, Arabic accent minced its words. A pity the ugly language was so common. It could do without it in its memory, but unfortunately information was necessary at some times. A hunting partner was always valuable, and there is no reason to help another when they are talking nonsense, or in another language.

RE: awaken - Larkee - 5/1/2026

Larke is prepared to fight. The serene location does nothing to his anxiety towards the stranger who'd approached him. The scent of blood on the other does not, either. Larke remembers wolves with blood-smell on them. They'd been after other wolves. Larke had nearly gotten killed by one of these blood-scented wolves.

The question, and accent, has Larke floundering. He doesn't think he's met a wolf with an accent like that before.

Larke doesn't.... Know the answer to the wolf's question.

I don't know. He says.

His voice goes flat, the fight gone. Clearly neither of them really want whatever's happening here.

I just woke up and now I'm here.

RE: awaken - Iðunn - 5/5/2026

The other gave up quick, almost physically deflating. Iðunn watched, emotionless, as he explained. This is not what it wanted, but it's what it got. No answers, only another young wolf equally as confused as he. It snorted, eyeing the water greedily. It was getting too hot, and that water looked lovely and cool.

The other seemed fairly useless, which was unfortunate for him. Iðunn was in no state to consider attacking another for no reason - violence had no use unless it served as a means to benefit him - so they were at a standstill.

We are same. Iðunn eventually said, after a very long, awkward pause. There were no other questions it had, it was not hungry, it was just confused, irritated, and hot. There was nothing the other could help him with, at least not in the means of survival. It would find another mountain range, and maybe someone who had answers about it's mysterious appearance in these lands.

RE: awaken - Larkee - 5/5/2026

Great. If neither of them know anything about their situation, Larke can't ask this stranger questions. Now that he has a good look at the wolf, Larke feels quite small. Choosing to fight this guy would be a disaster - he's glad in a weird way that this wolf chose to not continue Larke's instigation.

He really needs to learn how to think before he reacts.

The silence stretches on for longer than Larke would like. It's awkward, he's not sure how to communicate with this guy. His toes scratch into the dirt below him.

What would Octavia do?

She probably would turn around and march off. Larke feels like that would be a bad idea.

What's your name? He asks instead.

Maybe he can build a good rapport and the two of them can get on with their lives.

RE: awaken - Iðunn - 5/5/2026

Another long stretch of silence. Iðunn barely bats an eye. It was used to the quiet, because it was used to being alone. This was different, but there was no pull at him to fill the space with words, instead he merely felt curious at what the short wolf would do next. It was not very good at reading expressions, but he looked uncomfortable, as many did when they faced Iðunn. It was used to that, too. It's yellow eyes found the man's toes as they scratched aimlessly into the earth, though it didn't have a clue as to why. Anxiety was an unknown factor in its world, and therefore was as foreign as English to it.

Eventually, the other man spoke, asking for its name. It stared a moment, as it knew the answer to this question, but took a bit to appreciate where he steered the conversation towards. No more animosity, it seemed. Iðunn. It told him, glancing towards the water once more, this time making a few slow steps towards it, giving the other wolf a comfortable amount of distance. Yours? He was not polite in the slightest, merely curious enough to ask. They at least had one thing in common; finding themselves in a strange world with no explanations, and had kept Iðunn's interest long enough. It was a question worth asking.

RE: awaken - Larkee - 5/5/2026

The stranger doesn't seem concerned with the awkwardness. Larke tries to take it in stride. His name sounds so... Unique. Not one Larke has heard before.

I'm Larke.

Once upon a time he would've answered with both of his other names. He doesn't feel so proud of them, right now. He doubts anyone in this place would know his family anyway. The idea of that is both terrifying, and refreshing. There is no weight of a pack being destroyed and a pack becoming anew on his shoulders. Just two strangers waking up in a strange place, and trying to make some sense of it.

Now what?

Iðunn moves closer to the water, away from Larke. The distance is both comforting and unnerving. Larke doesn't want to be alone.

Being alone - and sometimes with Octavia - had been the worst time of his life. He doesn't want to do it again.

Where um. Larke does not approach Iðunn despite him moving away. Did you come from? Like. Before you woke up here?

RE: awaken - Iðunn - 5/7/2026

Larke, he said. What a strange name, it thought. If it had a greater grasp on English words, it might have known that a lark was a bird, but unfortunately, it only knew the base descriptor of bird. Larke, It said, testing the word out on its tongue. It came out different than how the man had said it, obviously, because everything did. Oh, how it loathed the common tongue... it was a great pity there were so few who spoke Arabic.

Larke did not move towards, or away from Iðunn, but continued to speak. It ignored him until it got to the edge of the water, dipping a foot in to test the waters. It was lovely, cool on it's too-hot flesh, but it stayed at the bank a moment to respond. Mountain. It said, simply. It did not know the name of the lands it came from, as it spoke to very little locals on top of said mountain. And, when he did, it was only about food.

It did not return the question, because it did not care where Larke came from. They were here now, weren't they?

Then, he stepped into the lake fully, even going as far to dip his head under to completely soak his pelt through. It made a half-circle, paddling slowly to the bank, still not too far from Larke. He only meant to cool off, after all. Once it had heaved its soaking form out of the water, without even bothering to shake, it looked at Larke again. Where you go now?
