Her mornings are quiet, private, but bustling. From dawn's first light, the princess is in motion. Combing fur, applying perfume, contorting until she can pin her fur back beneath the teeth of a jade comb or flower pin. Within these rituals is found a meditative rhythm, one that sets her mind both at ease and alert for the coming day's trials and triumphs.

She sweeps out of her chambers aglow with divinity, a hair not out of place. Shining golden eyes skim the fern-clad stone and vine-wrapped trees, before alighting on a never-far, dependable pale figure. Lian's expression warms just slightly, the faintest approving curve placed upon her lips. Taro . She sweeps a paw toward him, inviting her guard closer as a servant dutifully materializes with a steaming cup of one of Myrrh 's brews. A second appears beside the first, and Lian pulls her cup close to take a sip.

The reclusive little apothecary is a treasure, one Lian intends to guard most fiercely. Taro, too, holds a close place in her heart. Lian believes herself most effective as a leader through loyalty, through identifying those of greatest skill and use to the Dynasty as a whole and caring for them as tenderly as her place in life permits. She is developing her own little court within the corridors of the Dynasty, in gifts of rare herbs or ingredients for Myrrh, in a careful eye on Taro, in attentive ears listening for the ebb and flow of gossip through the halls. A situation like Yuezhuo's building resentment and Kexin's disruption cannot happen again. Not with the Empress close to bearing heirs, not with her health on the line. Come, indulge me in a cup. See if it is to your liking.

If you asked him, Taro would say he’d been handling his job as Princess guard very well. He’d done his best to become Lian’s shadow. A large, white, clumsy shadow; but a shadow none the less.

Taro had learned the rhythm of Lian’s morning routines—the way she wakes and presents herself the moment the sun greets the sky. She looked to be made of sun beams and dew drops, warm and impressively perfect. He often wondered if there were ever days she was sick or had some type of bed head. He was used to seeing her be perfect, but he couldn't help wanting to see her be something less meticulous.

As she spoke his name, Taro’s head lifted a level, ears pressed forward and a lopsided grin etched into his features. A gestured paw was all it took for him to oblige her invitation, lilac eyes observing the delicate color of the teas. His smile shifted to something softer, something warmer. Lian was so similar to Izumi. Kind, even to those of lesser status. Welcoming to those that couldn’t always offer any benefits in return.

Bowing in thanks, the man sat to the side of his charge, allowing himself to ease comfortably into their current situation. Less guard and ward, more simply… friends.

Ya know, you’ve gotten pretty good at this princess thing, a teasing smile was followed by a sample of his gifted drink. Not that ya weren’t good before, but you’re a bit different now. the first time they’d met was far from her home, so in his eyes he’d seen a lot of growth.

m’sure you’ll be a great empress one day, he was pretty certain of it. Another sip of his tea, and he felt a comforting sensation bloom in his chest. Reminds me of home. His other home. And his family.
