For a time, she had dispersed from the mortal world to another. They hadn't needed her. No, she'd instead followed her mother, Freya, into the battlegrounds of the afterlife. She knew there would be purpose for here ... this place ... this ...

... Valhalla.

She. A goddess. Immaculate. No longer entrapped within the visualization of the mortals, yet viewed instead by those worthy of her gaze. Yes. And she would do her work there, taking the time to scour the battlefields and collect the souls of the deceased and gather them against her own breast. For they were hers and she was theirs.

The patron of the fallen.

A soft smile graced her lips.

And then she was expunged.

Spat out. Refused.

And the body, soft and earth-bound, would wash up among the surf. Half water, half land ... she was Eir no longer, and would revert into the delicate, mortal form of Rune. And her memories, weak and human, would perish beneath the veil as the woman's body erupted from the sand with a sputter.

Pathetic Eir. Forgotten Rune.

And, from a distance, her skin would glow, scrawling with runes as her emotions grew triggered.

Disruption. Disruption. Disruption.

She was a beacon. A lighthouse.

A landmine.

White sand and palm trees. An unreasonable amount of water. Things he had never cared to see before. Traveling the world in his previous life, one would think he'd visited a beach at some point. If he had, it certainly hadn't left enough of an impression to matter. The silvered canine kept a respectable distance from the tide, watching the waves crawl across the shore before retreating again.

The ocean seemed determined to repeat the process forever. A waste of effort. Pitiful in his aqua eyes.

Dried dirt clung stubbornly to his fur. As he stretched and rose from beneath the shade of a palm tree, faint glints of silver caught the sunlight through his coat. Warm sand shifted beneath his paws with every step. Annoying.

Then he saw it. A flash of bright aqua in the distance. Not the ocean. Too concentrated. Too vibrant.

His silver tipped ears flicked forward. The color belonged to a bundle of fur sprawled near the shoreline. For a moment, he simply stared. A cock of his head, she had mixtures of sand and blue colorations intertwined in her fur.

The thing looked less like a creature and more like something the sea had grown tired of carrying. A reject. He thought to himself. Why was she glowing? This was the first time here he had seen that.

Blue eyes narrowed as he approached. Sand crunched softly beneath his paws before he finally stopped a short distance away. All in case she lunged for him. A thick Russian accent rolled from his tongue. What are you doing?

For a moment, all she heard was the rhythmic thrumming of the waves. The water, ice cold, would lap at her toes. She was saturated in brine, woven with the delicate lace of seaweed, and her fur was massively and completely disheveled.

She was certain she looked as useless as she felt.

The dual-toned teen would cough, expelling saline from her depths as she gently stirred. Stiffness ached from the bellies of her muscles, and she grunted as she started pulling herself upward, bracing her eyes against the painful brightness of the sun. Her head ached.

As the pounding of her heart steadied ... the scrawling words on her skin would dissipate.

"What are you doing?"

She hadn't heard him approach, between the roar of the ocean and the ringing in her ears. Rune's head lifted, dueling green eyes tracing over the smaller, masculine figure. What was she doing? Obviously, she was ... she was ... Rune's brows would furrow as she digested the stranger's question. What was she doing? She couldn't ...

I ... can't remember, she told him finally, ears suddenly flattening atop her head. In fact, the last thing she remembered was leaving Skjǫldrheim to visit the South. But there was a horrifyingly large span of vacancy in her memory that was clouded by a black haze. Where ... is this? Where are we? She finished pulling herself upward, her fur already crusted as the ocean water rolled off her skin.

You’ve possibly sustained a rather significant head injury. Did the ocean give you too many blows to the head? The healer avoided the question entirely. A gruff rumbled from his chest as silvered paws carried himself closer to the shoreline. Where her mess of fur laid, he set forth to try and drag her away from the ocean. Ain’t no way he would help her with the tides. One… awful experience in water was enough to keep this man from wanting to swim.

But the white beach had other plans.

Far different plans.

As Chisuke leaned to bring himself closer, extending a foreleg caused sand to give away from his weight. A loud YELP.

THUD.

Then SPLASH!

The musky canine had fallen into a small pit leading into a puddle of water. Teeth sneered as his tail stung from the sensitivity of the warm waters.

Nonononono. Chisuke screeched loudly, climbing the octave. Silvered paws scrambled uselessly at the collapsing sand. Ebisu, a small pink chested robin had soared up into the air, leaving the canine to his own fate. Mud and grime that caked his fur, was now tangled in the richness of salt-infused water.

Sharp claws tried to grab onto anything to clutch himself out, but it was useless. Chisuke had begun thrashing himself. Blue eyes widened as he gulped a lump in his throat. Not like this. Not in front of someone who needed his help. He could fix this—

He could—

It was useless. The sand refused to cooperate, he could only hear the rippling sounds of the tide.

Oh.

And the rapidly increasing heartbeat of his own.

A head injury? Rune would tilt the very head in question, her eyes suspicious as she pondered the thought. Perhaps she had sustained trauma — that would explain the lapse in her memory. But she was certain there was something more to it than that … call it a feeling, but she suspected her memory had been stolen by something — or someone.

But that problem would have to wait.

The stranger was approaching her. Rune would shift upward, demonstrating her height and pressing her ears toward him as she warily regarded his approach. The edges of her hackles would stand, but she remained otherwise passive — she was far bigger than him, even if weakened by the ocean. And she would put up a hell of a fight.

In fact, she was much bigger than him.

Wait. Was he getting smaller?

Rune’s head tilted as she watched him slide into some sort of sandy trap, the hungry waves of the ocean waves dancing with delight as the tide swelled. And it seemed even more delighted with the stranger’s frantic paddling, drawing him deeper into the hungry belly of the shore as he muttered mindlessly.

Rune stood up, taking a few careful steps forward. Hættu, (Stop) she’d start, before correcting herself back to common, Stop flailing. It was a statement more than a demand, but if he wanted not to drown, perhaps he would heed her advice. Roll toward me, she would continue, edging as close as she could to the soft sand and stretching her neck to test her reach.

No flailing, she reminded him, stern but somehow soft. Just roll.

Her jaws would reach toward him, snapping at the air and attempting to grab his scruff and lift the smaller man right out of the sand trap. She felt her muscles ache, her paws sliding slightly against the soft sand as the rescuee tried to become the rescuer.

Ebisu soared above the two canines. Pink eyes that glared with tiny judgement. Chirping high as the sun beat down on his wings.

That didn’t distract Chisuke nearly enough from his overwhelming fear of water. Water rippled against his fur, pulling dirt and grime as he flailed. Only when she commanded him to stop did it actually work.

Blue eyes narrowed onto the chimera’d wolf. “Nani-sama da?” (“Who do you think you are?”) His maw scrunched with annoyance, ears flattening against his skull. Never was anyone as firm with him as Rinon was. Anyone who was, he left them. Well... he couldn't exactly leave this time. The sand kept him rather stuck. His scarred tail lifted up away from the water, teeth clenched against the pressure.

While his tone argued with her, he did exactly as she suggested. A twist of his body, an attempt to roll closer towards her. Whatever strength he had left of his adrenaline he purposefully rolled towards the big woman. Now he had to rely on her to be quick enough... a woman with a head injury.

Wasn't that such luck?

Although she could not understand the language, she could feel the tone of his words, noting the way his jaw scrunched and his ears flattened. Despite his predicament, he would still protest? Either he did not care about his life, or he cared about it less than he cared about his ego — men certainly hated being told what to do.

Rune felt her paws sliding, a soft grunt escaping her lips in warning.

It would not be long before they were both doomed to the ravenous sand pit.

Eventually, the stranger folded, leaning his body toward Rune's waiting jaws. She moved like a serpent, snapping at his scruff the minute it was within reach. The added weight caused one of her limbs to sink deep, straining her other shoulder as the hungry ocean rumbled in anticipation. She had no choice but to pull, coiling tight the rest of her body and feeling a sharp ache in her neck and down her back.

Eventually, her foot dislodged from the trap, a loud suctioning squelch reverberating as she finally was able to pull them both backward and up the shore. Panting, she backpedaled to dryer sands, limping slightly as she dropped the soaking figure on the beach rather unceremoniously.

Her neck ached, reverberating up and down her spine with an uncomfortable twinge. The sea behind them hissed. Rune would turn her gaze toward the stranger for a moment, ears pressing forward as she ... smiled? A soft puff of laughter, chiming and airy, pressed beyond her lips as she raised a playful brow. I wonder what you've done to piss Njord off so badly, she mused, another soft laugh falling from her lips. Are you okay?

Ryūjin can suck it. Chisuke seethed, his chest beat heavily as he scrambled as far away from the pit as he could. Half his mud-caked coat was now a silvery shine with salt embedded into tufts. Worn paws shook off sand.


Sand was stupid. The beach was stupid. He was over it. While inside his raging beating chest, he was thankful to be as far away from water as possible. Silver tipped ears flattened hard against his head. Ryūjin needs a new hobby than sending turtles and pitholes after me.


Chisuke stood, swishing his scarred tail while his blue eyes heavily judged the tide before them. She was supposed to be the patient. Not him. Stupid. Stupid. Why was the worlds always against him? Curse the gods. A mere scoff covered up his annoyance by being pulled by a mere woman out of a pit.


Rinon would never let him live this down.


As well as one can be. I mean you got swallowed by his wrath. He only sunk the sand under my paws. Baby blue eyes rolled as he slunk down on his rump.
