Night called to Rhaegal, as it had ever. He and his siblings having been born into a time of seemingly perpetual darkness, it seemed only natural that the child would grow to find a certain love for it that he did not have for the light of day. It was beautiful, comforting, captivating and Rhaegal found himself often walking under moonlight with a feeling of rejuvenation that others might feel with the sun on their face.

This night in particular, it held a silence he was not blessed to often experience. Usually there was the chattering of little rodent creatures, the coo of owls, the rustling of trees in the breeze. This night, not even the wind stirred. Not even the night creatures sang. Rhaegal knew that winter was coming, but the quiet of a winter's night was still quite some time from them. (He was still secretly excited for winter. He was only a newborn near winter's end last year and did not have the freedom to explore it as he did now.)

Walking through one of Northfall's various pine forests, he moved through the tall trees with an often practiced stealth. He had grown watching his brother Achlys move in such a precise and delicate manner that it had intrigued the youth. He wanted to move in such fluidity too. To melt with the darkness for which he had taken to love. And yet - yet he was not as quiet as he might have thought himself to be. This, and there just happened to be others around more deadly noiseless than he.

The young wolf came to a sudden stop when he realized that he was being watched and the creature which was doing so stood just ahead on the shadowed path which he too walked, staring back at him with, which became quickly obvious, empty sockets.

....Achlys?

Though time with the two animals staring at each other would reveal that this was not his dark, eyeless brother at all, but another cryptid of sorts he was not entirely certain if it was alive at all.

It was solidly black, true enough, though only where fur was still held on its tall, lean figure. In various areas it lay bare of pelt, with its skeleton beneath exposed to the elements. Its head was skinless, revealing an entire canine-like skull and instead of ears, were tall bones which curved inward in resemblance to horns. As well as its spine which seemed to have small bony spikes down it and the upper portion of its ribs too, which revealed an exposed, beating heart. As it shifted its body to face Rhaegal from being previously viewed from its side, its stilt-like legs moved out and awkwardly, almost like a spider's might. Its empty sockets misted a pale blue, floating upward from its skeletal face. It lifts its head fully in recognition of the wolf's presence, but spoke not.

What… Rhaegal speaks slowly, so that his words would not stutter in his strictness state. Who are you?

He was drawn away from his own wandering at the recognition and the unnatural silence. There were different kinds of quiet in the world, but this was not the hush of snowfall or the stillness before a storm, this was absence. A strange hollowing of the forest where all life seemed to understand that something had stepped among them that did not entirely belong.

Darkness folded around him as he slipped between the pines paws finding the earth with practiced precision. He had heard Rhaegal ahead some time ago and had been following the faint disturbance of his brother's passage. Familiar color assembled immediately within Achlys's mind, painting the shape of his brother somewhere ahead. He slipped soundlessly between the pines until something else began bleeding into that constructed world.

The scent was difficult to understand, death was there but it was not the ordinary decay of something left too long. This was deeper, threaded through something that was in fact — alive.

....Achlys? Rhaegals voice confirmed exactly where he was.

Achlys emerged from between the trees, coming alongside Rhaegal before settling subtly between the boy and whatever stood before him. Usually scent gave him certainty. Shapes formed naturally from the information surrounding him, allowing Achlys to understand where something began and ended, how it stood, where it moved.

This creature was different and its outline assembled strangely within his mind. There were gaps where there shouldn't have been, places where the scent of flesh abruptly ended and old bone began. Yet within the center of it... life, blood, a beating heart.

Achlys's head tilted and something stirred within him. Recognition came without memory, crawling from somewhere far deeper than this life. While he didn't know this creature directly, he knew things like it, or had. Death had surrounded Achlys for longer than his memories could account for. He had served it, walked beside it, delivered others into its keeping again and again and again.

Some things belonged to the living, some belonged to the dead. And some lingered strangely between, Don't run, the words came quietly, directed toward Rhaegal without Achlys turning toward him. There was none of the horror in him that ought to have existed. If anything the creature had awakened a calm, something ancient inside him seemed to settle into place comfortable within the presence of something that should have been unnatural.

Unless behind the scenes content has been discussed & agreed upon, Achlys operates on a strictly organic basis
which means it is assumed that if it hasn't happened in a thread ─ it hasn't happened!
